The Pre-Raphaelites: Links
Founded in England in 1848 by twenty-year-old Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood rejected the formalism and rigidity of the English Royal Academy and instead decided that that the only true great art came from the era before the 16th century Italian painter, Raphael. They chose a style that was meant to be both lush and realistic; by using bright colors on a white background, their paintings have great depth and brilliance. For their paintings they chose subjects from medieval tales, bible stories, classical mythology, and nature, and because of the subject matter, most of their paintings tell a story.
